About Me

Hi. My name is Grace and I’m a long way from home…

If you’ve come here to read up on the glamorous life, you’ve come to the wrong place. I write about what it’s like to suddenly find yourself living in the UK… and it wasn’t your idea.

I’m a wife to a very industrious geek, mom to an even busier toddler, and an American… and am completely unapologetic on all counts.

This is Mike.

(Say “Hi”, Mike.)

I met him the autumn after I graduated from college and have loved him ever since!

He’s smart and funny, generous and kind, methodical and the most patient person I have ever met.

Mike always has something interesting to say, speaks Japanese fluently, and has a mental catalog of TV trivia and commercial jingles dating as far back to his childhood in the ’70s.

We were married in October 2004. In April 2006, our son, Avery, was born and the following January, I became a stay-at-home-mom.

One day we were living a quiet, cushy life in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas and the next he was accepting a job in London…

…that started in FOUR weeks time.

I’ve been given more notice than that for baby showers!

This is Avery and he’s the REAL brains behind this operation.

He is interested in how stuff works, things that go “vroom” and holding the map. He adores his dog, Blue, “Toby the Tram Engine”, and “The Backyardigans” (American version only).

He’s a happy boy and very friendly and sweet, but likes things to be done a certain way and he wants them done right NOW.

Yep, he’s pretty much the perfect combination of Mike’s and my quirks and idiosyncrasies, and he amazes us more and more everyday.

Don’t even pretend that you come here for my witty observations and candor, or even Mike’s charm and good looks.

We all know it’s all about the kid.

  1. Hi There!

Welcome to England. I envy you all living in London – we’re Americans out in Surrey since we have 3 kids and could not afford a big enough house in the city. Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures!

  2. Hi! I’m an American in London as well. Shoot me an email and let me know where you’re located. Maybe we can meet somewhere for the kids to play…my youngest just turned 2! 🙂

    Hi Grace,

I am enjoying your blog! I am an Aussie (hope I am still welcome!) and will be moving to London early next year. I love reading about others experiences in the UK. I lived in Manchester for 18 months a few years back, so I treat that as my trial run!
Keep posting and telling us all about your new life. Hope you are settling in well.
    Good luck!

  5. Found you through the Expat Women’s newsletter. I read through some of your posts and had quite a giggle! I look forward to reading more!

  6. Hi Grace,
Like Joanne, I found you through the Expat Women’s website. I am Hospitality Chairperson for the Chilterns American Women’s Club and invite you to take a look at our website. We offer many great activities to our members, including day-trips, trips abroad (occasionally) and a wonderful Moms and Tots group. Several of our members live in London and travel to the sub-urbs regularly!

  7. Hi Grace!

    Welcome to the UK!

I have three girls and have been here on and off for about 18 years!

I have an expat mums blog — can I put some of your posts there? http://www.expatmumsblog.com

The UK grows on you, hang in there!
